Feminesse is a new product from Rejuvenesse, the manufacturer's and distributors of the well known ProFLEX range of Glucosamine products (www.rejuvenesse.com) for osteoarthritis and the Cholesterex range of Policosanol products for cholesterol reduction (www.cholesterex.co.za).
Feminesse contains 80mg Black Cohosh Extract (root and rhizome extract containing 2.5mg triterpene glycosides), 5mg Policosanol and 400mcg Folic acid.
It is a natural product specifically formulated for women to help relieve peri-menopausal and menopausal problems.
Feminesse is particularly unique in that it contains 5mg policosanol per tablet. During peri menopause and menopause women's hormone levels drop dramatically and hence there is often an elevation of cholesterol and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A large group of 224 postmenopausal women were studied on policosanol and after 18 weeks the group receiving policosanol demonstrated a 17% decrease in total serum cholesterol, a 27% reduction in LDL cholesterol and a 29% rise in HDL cholesterol. In the group not receiving policosanol four subjects experienced cardiovascular problems.
Feminesse helps :

Feminesse is therefore indicated to help support the cardiovascular system, the vasomotor imbalances and the physiological changes in the peri-menopausal, menopausal and post menopausal women.
Feminesse which is a one-a-day slow release tablet provides a non-oestrogenic natural choice for women who choose not to take hormone replacement (HRT).
Feminesse is available, nationally, only at pharmacies , is nappi coded for medical aid reimbursement subject to exclusions from certain schemes.
The following should be noted:
- Feminesse is contraindicated in pregnant and breast feeding women
- Feminesse should not be used together with HRT as there are no clinical trials that have studied the effects of the combination
- Feminesse may increase the effect of anti-hypertensives (blood pressure medication) and produce a slight additional decrease in blood pressure
- Feminesse should not be used by those who have a sensitivity to aspirin as Black cohosh contains salicytates
- Feminesse may be used by type 1 and type 11 diabetics but sugar levels should be monitored
Side Effects: Some side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhoea and headache have been noted. The gastro intestinal side effects are reduced by taking the tablet after a meal
Feminesse helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels by the inclusion of 5mg policosanol, an extract from the wax of sugar cane. Policosanol can lower LDL cholesterol ('bad cholesterol') up to 25% and increase HDL cholesterol ('good cholesterol') by up to 29%.
